He ducked and stepped from the teep and into the immediate joyous screams of the children. They ran to be near him. His entourage grew as they made their way to the story-stone, another of the changes. He would sit on it and the children would crowd as close as they dared and sit. Parents, warriors and others would stand behind them.

His audience hushed.

“I will tell you the Wiitamaal, have you heard it?” Blank expressions showed they had not. Awyn continued. “It is the memory of Wiita the wise. All should know of Wiita and remember his story. It is only through his courage that we are able to live in the valleys. Without his leadership, our people and their our beliefs would be lost.” The small crowd listened intently, as others joined them. He did not know how much they remembered if any. He would continue to relate the maal and hope to find someone who could continue when he was gone. Someone must remember if the stories are to become a part of the people.

“Far back in the memory of time, before man walked the valleys of the mountains, almost before Agort was laying her eggs, men lived in a land far away, a place called Langit. Langit is far beyond where Agort bit the ground, beyond even the vision of the spirits. It was a land of great abundance where there was enough for all. Animals roamed, waiting for the hunters, and vegetables grew where there would be grasses. Trees stood tall and straight. And they were laden with fruits, nuts, and berries beyond even the imagination. It was a place where life was easy. Langit was a land of the Gods.

Into this world came a man who rejected the ways of the Gods. The man was known as Hyter. He preached that man was better than the Gods, and that women should serve men in every way. He believed that hunting was the right of man and hunts were begun though food was not needed. Too many animals were left to rot where they fell while men celebrated their skills. The Gods were not pleased.

They sent rains to turn Langit into mud. They called on winds to knock down the trees. They sent their plagues to destroy the animals. He was a leader of his tribe, but he was also a good speaker. His words spread despite the ire of the spirits.

Hyter convinced those of his tribe that the Gods were wrong. So powerful were his words that the men accepted his teachings. His thoughts and ideas spread to other tribes, and there was discontent.

When a tribe heard of his ideals, the women of that tribe rebelled against their men. Many died for speaking the word of Hyter as men tried to assert their place above the Gods. Regardless of this, Hyter’s word grew stronger each season. The tribes began to follow his teachings. A new type of conflict blossomed, not a battle of honor but a war of belief.
